How To Write Stories As A Non-Native Speaker Of English

For those who speak English as a second language, choosing the appropriate words for storytelling can be quite a challenge. The sentence formation and grammar come after the selection of the right words. This is especially the case when we want to spin a good yarn.

READ ........ A lot

If you want to get good at storytelling and start writing, there’s no alternative to reading. It’s a must.

But, do not just pick any book and start reading!

  • Fiction

What it demonstrates, is the use of different elements such as central idea, organization, expression, word choice, point of view, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

  • Newspapers

Reading newspaper articles teaches you how to persuade, argue, inform, and craft headlines.

  • Blogs

Blogs have a conversational tone which newspapers do not. Subscribe to your favorite blogs so that you read them when a new article pops up. This helps you develop your style as well.

WRITE ........ A Lot

The answer is to do it in private first.

When you are a non-native writer and a beginner in writing, it may not be the best idea to go public as negative feedback might cause you to give up altogether.

LISTEN ........ A Lot

Podcasts and songs can greatly impact how you speak in terms of your tonality.

WATCH ........ A Lot

In the 21st century, platforms such as Youtube, and Netflix can be used to refine how we express ourselves by observing native speakers and modeling them.

SPEAK ........ A Lot

Writers write the way they speak. Not Always, but it seems to hold for most times.

Be Confident

"If you never try, you’ll never know what you are capable of."

-John Barrow

An important step is to be bold and make the move by writing, narrating the stories, and asking for feedback.

Is Constructive Criticism important!?

YES, but from the right people.

By starting here, you will know where you stand and can plan on working with what you have.

The feedback should essentially come from people who are well-versed not only in the language but can also craft a good story.
